Why Calculate Your Raise Percentage?

Whether you're evaluating a job offer, preparing for a negotiation, or just received a raise, knowing the exact percentage helps you compare it against inflation, industry benchmarks, and your own expectations. A $3,000 annual raise sounds different depending on whether your current salary is $30,000 or $300,000.

Formula 1: Calculate Your Raise Percentage

Use this when you know your old and new salary and want to find the percentage increase.

Raise % = ((New Salary − Old Salary) ÷ Old Salary) × 100
Example: Your salary increases from $52,000 to $56,160. What percentage raise is that?

Step 1: $56,160 − $52,000 = $4,160
Step 2: $4,160 ÷ $52,000 = 0.08
Step 3: 0.08 × 100 = 8% raise

Formula 2: Calculate Your New Salary from a Percentage

Use this when you've been offered a percentage raise and want to know your new annual salary.

New Salary = Current Salary × (1 + Raise % ÷ 100)
Example: Your current salary is $48,000 and you're offered a 6.5% raise.

Step 1: 1 + (6.5 ÷ 100) = 1.065
Step 2: $48,000 × 1.065 = $51,120

That's $3,120 more per year, or $260 more per month.

Is Your Raise Keeping Up with Inflation?

A 3% raise sounds good — until inflation is running at 5%. In real terms, you're actually taking a pay cut. To calculate your real raise, subtract the inflation rate from your raise percentage.

Real Raise = Raise % − Inflation Rate %
Example: You get a 4% raise but inflation is 6%.

Real raise = 4% − 6% = −2%

You're effectively earning 2% less in purchasing power than last year.

Comparing Two Job Offers

When comparing offers, don't just look at the base salary. Consider the full package:

A job paying $60,000 with 5% pension match and full health coverage may be worth more in total compensation than a $65,000 offer with no benefits.
